Dry Creek Vineyard, 2014, Wilson Ranch, Clarksburg Chenin Blanc:
Though technically at the threshold of off-dry (.6 residual sugar) it strikes my palate as completely dry with a silky texture and firm acidity. Consistent year after year, the flavors call to mind fresh green apple, green melon rind, and chlorophyll, with a bit of minerality through the finish. This versatile wine works equally well as an aperitif, or as an accompaniment to seafood, poultry or cream sauces. It sports a reasonable 13% alcohol. Some wines earn their points on complexity(see: https://epicurean-traveler.com/epicurean-tasting-room-2/what-the-ratings-really-mean/); this one earns its points on finesse, with perfect balance and structure. 12,782 cases produced. $12.00. 90 points.
2012 Pennywise, California Pinot Noir:
This is one of those wines that rates a solid Bronze in a wine competition. It’s a big, soft, plumy wine with hints of dark chocolate, cloves, and even a little earthiness. It’s not going to turn heads with its complexity, but it’s easy to drink and has a sense of varietal character. What more can you ask for $9.00? 85 points.
